Charles Pierre de Frédy, Baron de Coubertin was a French educator and historian, founder of the International Olympic Committee, and its second president. He is known as the father of the modern Olympic Games. Born into a French aristocratic family, he became an academic and studied a broad range of topics, most notably education and history. He graduated with a degree in law and public affairs from the Paris Institute of Political Studies. It was at Sciences Po that he came up with the idea of the Summer Olympic Games. The Pierre de Coubertin medal is an award given by the International Olympic Committee to athletes who demonstrate the spirit of sportsmanship in the Olympic Games.

About Pierre De Coubertin

French academic and historian who founded the International Olympic Committee and helped establish the modern Olympic Games. He is known for his academic work in the field of education, and released a book on the subject, L’Education en Angleterre, in 1888.

Before Fame

He traveled to England in the early 1880s and studied with Thomas Arnold, a Rugby School teacher who emphasized the importance of physical education.

Achievement

His poem, Ode to Sport, was honored with a gold medal at the 1912 Summer Olympic Games.

Family Life

He was born into an aristocratic family in Paris; his father, Baron Charles Louis Fredy, was an artist who was prominent on the Parisian salon scene.

Associations

He was played by actor Louis Jourdan in a 1984 NBC miniseries on the subject of the Olympic Games.
