Marya Mannes was an American author and critic, known for her caustic but insightful observations of American life. Mannes also wrote under the pen name of, “Sec.”

Author, editor, and American cultural critic whose work, Subverse, was published in 1959; she edited Vogue Magazine and wrote numerous pieces for The New Yorker as well.
Her maternal grandfather was a conductor and her uncles were as well, thus her qualification and exposure to culture and music.
She hosted a television program called I Speak For Myself in the late 1950s.
She was married three times and was survived by one child after her 1990 death in San Francisco.
Her brother, Leopold Mannes, was a well-known musician, and her parents established New York’s Mannes College of Music.
