Leslie James “Les” Clark was the first of Disney’s Nine Old Men. Joining Disney in 1927, he was the only one to work on the origins of Mickey Mouse with Ub Iwerks.

About Les Clark

Animator and cartoonist, most recognized as the first of Disney’s Nine Old Men. He was an incredibly fast worker and created Disney’s Steamboat Willie in a matter of hours.

Before Fame

He met Walt Disney when he was still a student at Venice High School in LA. After graduating, he worked up the nerve to ask him for a job and, based on his amateur sketches, was given an opportunity.


He was also able to direct animated features, including his first, Paul Bunyan, in 1958.

Family Life

He was born and raised in Los Angeles.


After a chance encounter with Walt Disney at a candy store, he worked up the nerve to ask him for a job after graduating from High School.
