He was internationally known for his work as a soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician.
He fathered Till Engel who would go on to become a pianist and also a professor at West Germany’s Folkwang Hochschule.
He was taught by Alfred Cortot from 1947 until 1948 at Paris’ École Normale de Musique.
