Harold Vernon Gould was an American character actor. He appeared as Martin Morgenstern on the sitcom Rhoda and Miles Webber on the sitcom The Golden Girls. A five-time Emmy Award nominee, Gould acted in film and television for nearly 50 years, appearing in more than 300 television shows, 20 major motion pictures, and over 100 stage plays. He was known for playing elegant, well-dressed men, and he regularly played Jewish characters and grandfather-type figures on television and in film.

Before Fame

He was born in Schenectady, New York to a Jewish postal worker father and a health department employee mother. He graduated as his high school’s class valedictorian and studied briefly at Albany Teachers College before serving in World War II.

Achievement

He acted in summer stock stage productions and finished his Albany Teachers College Bachelor’s degree before earning a Ph.D. in theatre from Cornell University in 1948.

Family Life

He married Lea Vernon in 1950. The couple had three children–Deborah, Lowell, and Joshua–and were married until Gould’s 2010 death from prostate cancer.

Associations

He first appeared as Martin Morgenstern in 1972 and 1973 episodes of Mary Tyler Moore‘s series The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Shortly thereafter, he became a series regular on the 1974 Mary Tyler Moore Show spinoff, Rhoda.
