Daniel Mark Lewin, sometimes spelled Levin, was an American–Israeli mathematician and entrepreneur who co-founded internet company Akamai Technologies. A passenger onboard American Airlines Flight 11, it is believed that Lewin was stabbed by one of the hijackers of that flight, and was the first person murdered during the course of the attacks.

Founder of the internet firm Akamai Technologies. He died battling a hijacker aboard American Airlines Flight 11 on September 11, 2001.
He attended the Israeli Institute of Technology and created an algorithm for optimizing web traffic, which made him enormously wealthy.
He was reported to have died from a stabbing while trying to foil the hijackers on the plane possibly from an accomplice he didn’t see behind him.
He had two sons, Eitan Lewin and Itamar Lewin, who were ages five and eight at the time of his death.
His technology was used by the Barack Obama website to stream video clips and by Reed Hastings’ Netflix for the same purpose.
