He earned a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music, London, when he was 15.
He was a pacifist who sought refuge in Ireland during World War II. He made invaluable contributions to the country’s musical landscape.

He was the first in England to perform Sergei Rachmaninoff‘s Piano Sonata No. 2 in B flat minor. He also received personal coaching on the piece from Rachmaninoff.
