William Joseph Waddington, was an English music hall performer and comedian who was born in Oldham, Lancashire. In later life he achieved stardom as the pompous ex serviceman Percy Sugden in Granada Television’s long-running soap opera, Coronation Street.

Though best remembered for his role as Percy Sugden on the popular British soap opera Coronation Street, this comedian also contributed to nearly 1,000 radio variety shows.
During the World War II years, he performed with a military entertainment company called The Blue Pencils.
His fourth wife, Sheila Torr, was the sister of the popular English comedians the Chuckle Brothers.
He was married four times. With his second wife, Lillian Day, he had two children.
During the 1970s, he and Sid James were the co-creators and stars of a live comedy act.
